Day 11 – TGOC 2026 – Tarfside

Oh well raining very heavily since 5am … and according to the weather forecast 18mm throughout the day.

I left as one of the last and changed my plan to now go to Edzell (20km) first, eat something there and then continue to the House of Dun (another 16km from there).

I heavily rained till about 12:00 and then stopped a little to start again at around 15:00 and really heavy at 18:00. So not quite right the forecast — the 18mm were correct though.

Took the tent down in rain … pretty much everyone else had left already
Arrived in Edzell and started to warm up and dry again … was a the same place during my first TGOC
Desert – had a Hamburger before that …
The arch entering Edzell from the South
The remainder of the big Edzell forest that a storm some years ago destroyed
I think that is were I left my stick … sad about the loss … was my companion for three TGOC crossings
Scotish National Trust – House of Dun – completely for myself 😊
Bridge of Dun train station — not active anymore – is now a museum – I waited here for the rain to die down and cooked my dinner
Was a nice and magical moment stop 😌

… and I found a campsite – close to the BRIDGE OF DUN and the River Esk … sun was shining right now 🫣 … first time today.

Learnings:

  • You find the best advise from people who have no own or hidden agenda
  • I rarely take breaks … typically walk for three or four hours continuously … but then a longer break is very important. Important advise for entrepreneurs!

Magic Moments:

I had the House of Dub and the wonderful park around it completely for myself – had to pay however … forgot my faithful stick companion! Thanks for your services and may someone else enjoy your company and service.

And before I actually came to the house I entered thr park from the North and waited under a bridge for the rain to calm down … and within 1 minutes Bruce and his two dogs came around the corner … no one seen all day and then this. Nice chap … told me I should camp in the walled garden … I was not bold enough to do that and had to pay the bill by becoming completely wet again.

That was the bridge that I was sitting under when Bruce came by …

Tomorrow could be short … but I am thinking about taking a couple of detours … one being the ARBIKIE DISTILLERY with their Rye Whiskies and their FIELD TO BOTTLE approach.
